Cesarean Birth

A cesarean birth is one in which the baby is delivered through surgical means instead of the traditional, natural delivery through the birth canal. When a vaginal deliver isn't viable, then a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen is used to remove the baby.

There are several reasons a vaginal delivery may not be the best option and a cesarean is necessary:

  • The baby is larger than mother's birth canal
  • Labor has stopped, causing the mother's cervix not to open enough
  • Concern for the baby or mother's health, a previous cesarean birth
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Breech - baby is turned around, feet & bottom first
  • Other medical conditions
