Services: Sexually transmitted diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases are diseases, infections, and viruses that are spread through sexual contact. Contact includes intercourse, mouth, and other forms of touching. Most STDS can be treated with antibiotics. Others, like AIDS, herpes, and genital warts are resistant to this type of treatment.

Several factors determine whether you are at risk of having an STD. Being sexually active, having many sexual partners, having a partner who has had many sexual partners, or having sexual intercourse with someone who has an STD, will greatly increase your risk.

Prevention is the best way to reduce your risk of getting an STD. Limit your sexual partners, know their history, use a condom, spermicide, get immunized, and avoid risky sex.

Pregnant women do risk passing on an STD to the baby, possibly harming the unborn child. Therefore, early treatment is the best chance to reduce the risk. Please consult with your physician if you believe you have been exposed to an STD.
